Microsoft Dynamics GP 2010 performance benchmark results

Posted on 04:00 by Unknown
The long awaited Microsoft Dynamics GP 2010 performance benchmark results are out. The Inside Microsoft Dynamics GP blog has the scoop on the new testing outcome. A couple highlights: a) concurrent users have been reduced from the previous 1,000 to 500 with the Product Management team citing "real-world customer feedback" as the reason for this decision; b) enphasis was made in testing the Microsoft Dynamics GP web services components along with heavy transaction processing.

The downside... now you cannot compare these results against the previous ones as the testing variables are different.

The full results of the test can be downloaded here (CustomerSource/PartnerSource access required).

Until next post!

Service Pack 5 affects Microsoft Dynamics GP 10.0 logon performance

Posted on 08:23 by Unknown
No need to be alarmed, but if you currently use Analytical Accounting with Microsoft Dynamics GP 10 and have applied the recently released Service Pack 5, you may experience slow logon performance due to extra records being added to the dbo.syMenuMstr table each time a user logs into the system.

As a temporary fix and workaround, you can setup a SQL Server job to run once a day (more depending on the number of users in your environment) that will clear the offending records:

use DYNAMICS;
go
delete from SY07110 where CmdParentDictID = 3180;

Upon logon, the menu items for Analytical Accounting are automatically recreated.

For more information on creating a SQL Server job visit MSDN.

Until next post!

Rescuing Moore's Law: Memristors

Posted on 05:01 by Unknown
While this topic may seem totally off subject, its future application will have tremendous impact on data storage and computer memory technology. Moore's Law says the number of transistors that can be squeezed onto an integrated circuit (chip) at least doubles every two years. The issue is, memory technology and flash drives are reaching the 20 nometers barrier, this is, the distance between transistors on a chip. Here comes Memristors, or Memory Resistors, a theory developed in the 1960's, but given the time, technologically impossible to achieve. Scientists and engineers have now embrace the theory and are developing practical applications that will allow things like phones and flash drives to store data very easily in the terabyte range, but more so, reducing the amount of power needed to store this data. Researchers are even talking about being able to power computers on and off without the tedious boot up sequence needed today without the lost of data. Today's RAM is completely cleared due to lack of power. Just imagine the impact this technology will have on database storage engines! This stuff is geeky stuff and it won't be fair for me to expand on the topic, so please read the complete article, Researchers rescue Moore's Law, over at MSNBC.

Until next post!
