GPUG Summit: Academy Training Day 2

Today marks the second day of training sessions at the Great Plains User Group (GPUG)  Summit (twitter: #gpsummit). The day started with the traditional early morning. However this time, I had to make it to the classroom at 7:30 AM to test my machine, projector, and VPC image, before students had a chance to sit.

I was scheduled to deliver a class on Data Migration and Integration Techniques which would cover anything from pitfalls to the core steps to get data from point A to point B, while showing how to use one of the integration tools in the process. Class ran relatively smoothly, except for a few lock ups with had with the VPC images.

By midday, it was time to get some lunch. GPUG had a special lunch for class instructors, so I had the opportunity to catch up with fellow MVP and business partner, Frank Hamelly, who was also delivering training this week - to be honest, it was the first time since Sunday that I had seen Frank, this is how crazy it is out here.

Lunch was over and it was time to continue training. My class was originally scheduled from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM PT, but by concensus, the schedule was cut to 2:00 PM. The class attendees were very receptive to the topics and participated during the session with real life examples of data migration and integration projects they were currently working on.

Following the training session, we had a speakers meeting in the Forum Ballroom, where I had the opportunity to meet Online Technical Partner Forum support engineers Kelly Youells, Christine Galea, Terry Heley, and Sarah Purdy.

I had a chance to sit down with Kelly and exchange a few conversations on a KB article update and to report a bug in the Navigation List Builder feature in SmartList Builder - more on that in a future post.

After receiving the last minute pointers for our speaking engagements from Kim Peterson, GPUG Director, I went down to the Expo hall. I have to admit, I was pretty surprised by the level of organization of this event. Clearly, a lot of time went into the logistics of getting this part of the Summit right.

I had a chance to check out a few products and catch up with a number of partners and friends. I had a chance to view the latest developments from the eOne Integrated Business Solutions team: SmartConnect and its ability to import data from any source into any destination - not only GP!; previewed the new SmartView product, which can only be described as the alter ego version of SmartList; and Node Builder, a complete solution to facilitate eConnect extensibility.

I also had a chance to check out the new products from Integrity Data and was especially impressed by their U-LINC product, a very powerful workflow builder for Microsoft Dynamics GP.

Continuing my tour around the Expo hall, I came across the guys from the Microsoft Dynamics Community team, which shared some of the upcoming improvements to the Community site, dubbed Community 3.0. Currently, the team is working on developing various usability labs that they expect to unveil to a select group of beta testers.

After talking to the Community team, we were joined by MVP Leslie Vail and went to dinner were we discussed various aspects of our personal lives and motivations to do what we do to improve the life of users and partners in the Community.

While I have already been here in Las Vegas for the past 2 days, I must say that the Summit is just getting started. I am definitely still feeling the effects of the timezone change and 2 training classes I have under my belt. Tomorrow, the Summit goes into full gear with the keynote session, various breakout sessions, and activities organized for attendees. I not schedule to speak until Thursday, so I expect tomorrow to be more of a transition day for me, awaiting for my wife to arrive in town.

GPUG Summit: Academy Training Day 1

Today marks the beginning of optional training classes at the GPUG Summit (twitter: #gpsummit) in Las Vegas, Nevada. My class in particular runs from 1:30 PM to 5:30 PM - more on that later.

The morning began pretty early for me (3:30 AM PT, 6:30 AM ET) due to the change of timezone, so I figured instead of wasting time rolling in bed, I would get up and do a final review of my slides to make sure I had incorporated the last minute updates that went out this past Friday and even yesterday. By 6:30 AM I was ready to get in the shower and go grab some breakfast.

Over at the Octavius Ballroom in the Conference Center, I decided to crash the GP Partner Connections (twitter: #gppc) keynote session, with Mark Rockwell opening for Microsoft's Anders Spatzek, Director of Customer & Partner Services and Programs.

Anders explained all the different changes in the Solution Provider Agreement (SPA) and the Microsoft Partner Network (MPN) program and  and how they affect partners currently doing business with Microsoft. The picture is clear: if you did not meet your SPA requirements (directives issued since 2009) by the end of October you are at risk of no longer being able to place orders with Microsoft - SPA requirements included a certification component, plus a revenue target component.

MPN requirements revolve around achieving Silver or Gold competencies in ERP and/or CRM - the same applies to other Microsoft product families - and maintaining the right number of certified individuals and customer references to satisfy the program requirements.

Anders went into the details of the Master VAR program and how it can be seen as a way for partners who are not going to make the cut after the SPA requirements go into effect, to continue doing business with Microsoft. At the end of the presentation, ISVs and VARs had a number of pointy questions for Anders, a clear reminder that not everyone comulgates with the concept.

After the session, I met up with John Lowther to catch up on a number of items, while getting acquainted with the classroom for my upcoming training session. I did all the necessary projector testing and made sure the VPC image was working properly. Once all the testing was completed, John and I headed downstairs for some lunch.

Back to the classroom, I sat back and waited for the time to wind down and began training at 1:30 PM PT as scheduled. Things went pretty smoothly with the class and the attendees, with no issues experienced by any of my students. Congrats to the GPUG team for making the experience enjoyable for everyone! Training ran its course until 4:45 PM, then we floor was opened to questions.

It was then time to go get some food after a long day of activities and find a space to just decompress. GPPC (twitter: #gppc) was hosting a little buffet, so once again, I decided to crash the event with John.

The afternoon got a bit busy and I ran across Kevin Racer and Brian Roney, both Senior Development Engineers at Microsoft. Kevin is one the engineers working on the Web Client project and Brian is a lead developer on the Dexterity team and the Web Client as of late. The good thing about talking to much smarter people than one appears to be, is the ability to be listened attentively, so I took the chance to run some Silverlight initiatives of mine to both of them and get some feedback in return on the things I can try out.

On my way out, I came across Sheila Jefferson-Russ and MVP Leslie Vail. A few conversations later, and I was ready to get back to my room to get ready for my next day training session on Data Migration and Integration Techniques.

GPUG Summit 2011: Getting there

This week marks the beginning of the Great Plains User Group (GPUG) Summit (twitter: #gpsummit), live from the Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States. I have to admit, this is my first Summit and I am not quite sure what to expect, though I am excited to meet up with a number of industry colleagues who will be attending: Kim Peterson, MVPs Mark Polino, Frank Hamelly, and Leslie Vail, Bob McAdam (twitter: @4mcadam), Jon Rivers (twitter: @jon_rivers), and the list goes on and on...

Also, this Summit marks the first time I will venture out in public without my sidekick, David Musgrave. Unfortunately, David could not make it to the Summit, but he will be delivering something never attempted at a major GP conference - a live presentation from Perth, Australia of the Support Debugging Tool, this upcoming Friday, November 11, 2011.

My flight was straight forward and uneventful from Atlanta, Georgia to Las Vegas, Nevada, in a 4 1/2 hour trip, which put me on the ground at roughly 6:40 PM PT. Upon arrival at the Caesars Palace, I checked in and quickly went up to my room in The Forum tower.

The hotel casino is one of the largest venues of its kind on the Las Vegas strip and is known for hosting some of the biggest events in town. This time around, Dynamic Communities is hosting the GP Partner Connections (twitter: #GPCC), AX User Group summit (twitter: #axsummit), the CRM User Group summit (twitter: #crmsummit), the NAV summit (twitter: #navug), and the GP User Group summit (twitter: #gpsummit).

As you can tell, a busy week by all accounts. I found Andy Hafer and team holding a meeting behind some dividers in the registration room, but just said hi and off I went to the #GPCC room. The following is a picture of the GPUG registration booth at the Octavius Conference Center.

Out of the registration area on my way to the GPCC room, I came across the Rockton Software team. As usual, it's great seeing Mark and Kelli - wait... they seem to be everywhere! I ask them where I could find someone - anyone!

Next, on the way to the GPCC room, I came across the creme de la creme of the GPUG summit: Bob McAdam, Andy Snook, Mark Polino and wife Dara Polino. A quick hello had me off to the GPCC room.

Finally in the GPCC room! The meetings had apparently concluded for the day, but I was able to catch up with some partners and Microsoft fellows: Brian Roney, Chad Sogge, and Pam Misialek. I also had a chance to shot a few pics with friends Sheila Jefferson-Russ, MVP Leslie Vail, Craig Klapman (Mekorma), Zubin Gidwani (QFactor Consulting), and David Eichner.

Since I got there at the tail end of the first day, everyone was ready to go to get some fresh air and walk around the strip. Pam (Microsoft) was particularly interested on the Bellagio Fountains water and light show, which is perhaps, one of the signature shows and landmarks in Las Vegas. The water and light show is carefully choreographed to the serenity of classic music.

Microsoft Dynamics GP Home Page scripting errors on Citrix XenApp

For the past 2 weeks I have been working on a fairly complex installation of Microsoft Dynamics GP for a hospitality staffing company whose hardware infrastructure is hosted by a very reputable provider. My client has made all their applications available to their end users via Citrix XenApp. Xenapp is Citrix Systems' secure on-demand application delivery platform for the Citrix Presentation Server.

After completing the installation of Microsoft Dynamics GP on the Citrix Servers, the next step was exposing the application to XenApp. This by all accounts is a fairly straightforward process. I logged into XenApp, launch Microsoft Dynamics GP and everything was working fine: home page, reports, SSRS reports, Business Analyzer, Management Reporter, the whole 9 yards!

A couple days later, users began reporting home page script errors as the one shown below:

Typically, if you follow the prescribed KB article 918313 - Frequently asked questions about the home pages and area pages features in Microsoft Dynamics GP, specifically Q21 and Q31 you end up understanding the following:

1. There must be a UserData folder under the %Appdata%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer folder. Under normal circumstances, this folder will get created when the user profile is first initiated.

2. You cannot roam user profiles and in particular the user Temp folders as this causes issues with Microsoft Dynamics GP.

We went through both questions - well, we went through all the questions - and realized that the UserData folder was not created for the end-users. Remember, I was not getting this error under my domain account, but I attribute this to the fact that I was a domain admin. Effectively, we setup the UserData folders, but the problem persisted.

I then went to the Run... command utility with my Windows account and typed %Appdata% and quickly realized that Windows Explorer was taking me to \\\UserData$\Appdata\..., in effect confirming that roaming profiles was active for all users on the domain.

This seems to contradict the previous point #2 above. However, this is where all hell broke lose with the infrastructure vendor. It turns out that disabling roaming profiles on a Citrix farm may cause all kinds of unpredictable results for other applications such as Microsoft Outlook which tend to lose personalized settings when bouncing between servers in the farm - this is a load balanced environment with 4 servers.

In short, disabling roaming profiles was not an option!

However, in working with the point Citrix and Windows engineer at the infrastructure provider and running some ProcMon traces, we realized that each time the home page attempted to load a file, ProcMon would display errors stating that the file location could not be found (effectively what the error was displaying even after the UserData folder was created). Since the profiles were being roamed this was disconcerting.

Of course, the immediate thought was, "it must be a permissions issue!". We then tested this theory by opening Windows Explorer and attempting to navigate to the Roaming Profile location with a standard user account. No luck!

The engineer quickly realized that the only way this could happen was via a Global Policy setting. In doing some more research, the likely candidate emerged: Remove Run Menu From Start Menu.

Clearly, from the policy description above, UNC paths are blocked and accessing local folders like \temp is a no, no (temp is roamed off to another server, remember?). Once we disabled the policy, Microsoft Dynamics GP started working like a charm and the errors were gone!

Now, you may say, "not sure we want to enable the Run commad for end-users". In my client's particular case, this made no difference because applications are being deployed via XenApp and not accessed from a desktop, so disabling the policy won't have any effect. At the end of the day, we all went home happy, which begs the question...

Can the above KB article be revised?

Mark Polino shows some love for Microsoft Dynamics GP integration tools

Like Mark, a lot of the work I do centers around large and complex systems integration with Microsoft Dynamics GP. Copying Smartlists favorites from one user to another

I get this question asked very often and sometimes have to dig up my notes on the subject, so I figured I would just post the SQL script that I use for this.

Smartlist favorites are traditionally stored in the ASIEXP81 table on a user-company basis. It's important to keep this in mind, as you can tailor this script to copy favorites from one user to another in the same company or the same user across various companies. However, this script replicates all favorites, across all companies for one user to another user.
